Afghan and US Military Officials Agree to Suspension of Central Command Designation and Afghan Investigation of Kam Air

KABUL, Afghanistan (February 04, 2013) – Senior officials from the Afghan Government and US Forces – Afghanistan met Feb. 2 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss the recent US Central Command designation of Kam Air.

During the meeting, US military officials explained why they had recommended the designation to the commander of CENTCOM.

Based on this discussion, CENTCOM will suspend the Section 841 designation and will communicate this normalized status to all affected US government agencies. Meanwhile, the Afghan Government has agreed to conduct a full investigation of Kam Air and, if warranted, to take further action. USFOR-A will support the Afghan Government’s investigation by providing evidence and documents as required.

The CENTCOM commander made the decision to suspend the 841 designation because he believes it is an appropriate, logical course of action at this time for the sovereign Afghan Government to conduct a full investigation of Kam Air.

Following completion of the Afghan Government’s investigation, USFOR-A and Afghan representatives will reconvene to mutually determine the next steps.

The Afghan Government and USFOR-A remain mutually committed to transparency and combating corruption.
